Microneedling in Ascot: What It Actually Does for Your Skin

If you have spent any time researching skin treatments, you have probably come across microneedling. It is one of the most talked about treatments in aesthetic medicine, and at Ascot Skin and Body Clinic it is one of the treatments I get asked about most often, usually by clients who have heard the name but are not quite sure what it involves or whether it is right for them.
As a clinician with a background in facial anatomy and aesthetic medicine, I want to explain this properly rather than just tell you it is "good for your skin." Here is what is actually happening, who it suits, and what you can expect if you book it with us here in Ascot.
What microneedling actually is
Microneedling uses a device with very fine, sterile needles to create thousands of tiny, controlled punctures in the skin. This sounds dramatic, but the punctures are microscopic. What they do is trigger your skin's natural wound healing response, which means an increase in collagen and elastin production without any cutting, heat, or downtime that you would get from more invasive procedures.
Collagen and elastin are the proteins that keep skin firm, smooth, and elastic. Production of both naturally slows as we age, which is part of why skin loses structure and texture over time. Microneedling works by encouraging your own skin to rebuild more of these proteins from within, rather than masking the problem from the outside.
What it helps with
In clinic, I most commonly recommend microneedling for:
Acne scarring and textural irregularities, where the controlled healing response can soften the appearance of pitted or uneven skin over a course of sessions.
Fine lines and early signs of ageing, particularly around the cheeks, forehead, and the delicate skin around the eyes.
Enlarged pores and uneven skin texture, which respond well to the gradual remodelling effect.
General skin tone and radiance, especially when combined with the right topical products immediately afterwards, when the skin is most receptive to active ingredients.
How we tailor it at Ascot Skin and Body Clinic
This is where treatment planning matters more than people expect. Microneedling is rarely a one size fits all treatment, and how I approach it depends on your skin, your goals, and what else might be going on underneath the surface. As part of my MSc in Aesthetic Medicine, my dissertation focused specifically on how facial anatomy, ageing patterns, and individual proportions should inform treatment planning rather than applying the same protocol to everyone. That thinking carries directly into how I run microneedling sessions in clinic.
For some clients, standard microneedling is the right call on its own. For others, I will combine it with skin boosters such as Profhilo or polynucleotides, or recommend it alongside our professional grade Dermalogica or Teoxane facials to support the skin's healing and hydration. We also offer microneedling alongside our PRP and vampire facial treatments for clients wanting to maximise the regenerative effect using their own blood plasma.
What to expect
A typical course is recommended in a series of sessions, usually spaced four to six weeks apart, since the collagen remodelling process takes time. Most clients see mild redness for a day or two afterwards, similar to a light sunburn, and we will always talk through aftercare so your skin recovers properly between sessions.
This is also why a proper consultation matters before any treatment plan is agreed. I assess your skin, your medical history, and what you are actually hoping to achieve before recommending a course of treatment, rather than just booking you in for a generic package.
Is microneedling right for you?
If you are dealing with acne scarring, textural concerns, or early signs of ageing and want a treatment that works with your skin rather than masking it, microneedling is worth discussing. It is also a treatment that pairs well with almost everything else we offer at the clinic, which is part of why I tend to build it into combined treatment plans rather than recommend it in isolation.
If you are local to Ascot, Berkshire, or the surrounding area and would like to talk through whether microneedling is the right fit for your skin, you can book a consultation directly through our booking page.
