The Best Treatments for Dark Circles and Under Eye Hollows

Dark circles and under eye hollows are two of the most common concerns we see at Ascot Skin & Body Clinic, and they are also two of the most misunderstood. In this post I explain what actually causes shadowing and hollowing around the eyes, and which treatments, from tear trough dermal filler to skin boosters and PRP, tend to work best for clients here in Ascot and across Berkshire. Understanding the difference between pigmentation, volume loss and skin thinning is the first step to choosing the right treatment for you.

Almost every client who comes to see me about their under eye area asks the same question first. Is this tiredness, or is this something else? The honest answer is that dark circles and hollows are rarely caused by sleep alone. There are usually two or three factors working together, and identifying which ones apply to your face is what separates a treatment plan that works from one that does not.

The first factor is volume loss. As we age, the fat pads that once cushioned the area beneath our eyes begin to shrink and shift. This creates a hollow, sometimes called a tear trough, that catches shadow and makes the whole under eye area look darker and more tired than it is. This is a structural change, not a skin problem, which is why creams and serums alone rarely fix it.

The second factor is skin quality and pigmentation. The skin under the eyes is some of the thinnest on the face, so blood vessels sitting close to the surface can show through as a bluish or brownish tinge. Genetics, sun exposure and simply the natural thinning that comes with age all play a part here.

The third factor, often overlooked, is the surrounding structures of the face. Puffiness in the lower eyelid, sagging in the mid face, or a loss of skin elasticity can all exaggerate the appearance of hollows and shadows even when the tear trough itself has not changed much. This is why a proper assessment of the whole face, not just the eye area in isolation, matters so much when planning treatment.

Because there are several possible causes, there is no single treatment that suits everyone. At Ascot Skin & Body Clinic we start every under eye consultation with a full facial assessment, looking at bone structure, fat compartments, skin quality and your own goals before recommending anything.

For genuine volume loss, a carefully placed dermal filler in the tear trough is often the most effective option. Using a soft, hyaluronic acid based filler designed specifically for this delicate area, we can restore lost volume and smooth the transition between the lower eyelid and the cheek. Because the skin here is so thin and the anatomy so unforgiving, this is a treatment that rewards precision and a thorough understanding of facial anatomy, which is exactly why an individualised, carefully planned approach makes such a difference to the final result.

If pigmentation and skin quality are the main issue rather than volume, skin boosters such as Profhilo or polynucleotides can make a noticeable difference. These treatments work by improving hydration, collagen production and overall skin quality rather than adding volume, which makes them a good option for clients whose under eye skin is thin, crepey or discoloured rather than hollow.

Ready to find out which approach is right for your under eye area? A face to face consultation lets us assess your anatomy properly and build a plan around your goals.

For clients dealing with a combination of fine lines, dullness and early volume loss, PRP (sometimes known as the vampire facial) can also be a useful addition to a treatment plan. By using your own platelet rich plasma to stimulate collagen and improve skin texture, PRP works gently over time and pairs well with other treatments as part of a longer term rejuvenation strategy.

Microneedling is another option worth considering, particularly for clients whose main concern is fine lines and skin texture rather than deep hollowing. It is a gentler treatment with minimal downtime, and it can be repeated regularly as part of an ongoing skin maintenance routine.

It is also worth saying that general health plays a bigger role in the appearance of your under eye area than most people realise. Dehydration, poor sleep, allergies and nutritional deficiencies can all make dark circles more noticeable. This is one of the reasons we also offer blood analysis and vitamin injections at the clinic, so that if there is an underlying nutritional cause contributing to how tired your eyes look, we can identify and address it alongside any aesthetic treatment.

One thing I always tell clients is that under eye treatment is not an area to approach casually. The anatomy here is complex, the margin for error is small, and the wrong technique or product can create a puffy or bluish tinge that is actually harder to correct than the original concern. This is exactly the kind of problem my postgraduate research focused on, looking at how facial anatomy, proportion and ageing patterns need to be assessed together rather than treating any single area of the face in isolation. That comprehensive approach is what guides every treatment plan we put together at the clinic.

If you are based in Ascot, Berkshire or the surrounding areas and have been considering treatment for dark circles or hollowing under the eyes, the best starting point is always a proper consultation. We will look at your anatomy, talk through your concerns and goals, and recommend an approach that is realistic, safe and suited to your face rather than a generic solution.

You do not have to live with tired looking eyes that do not reflect how you actually feel. Book a consultation with Ascot Skin & Body Clinic today and let us help you find the right treatment for your under eye area: https://ascotskinandbody.simplybook.it/v2/
