Salmon DNA Facial: The Science Behind the Buzz

If you have spent any time on social media over the last year, you will almost certainly have come across the Salmon DNA facial. Also known as the salmon sperm facial or a polynucleotide facial, this regenerative skin treatment has become one of the most searched for terms in aesthetics, and here in Ascot, Berkshire, it is quickly becoming one of the most requested treatments at our clinic. As a clinician with an MSc in Aesthetic Medicine, I want to explain what is actually happening beneath the viral headlines, because the science is genuinely interesting and the results, when done properly, can be excellent.

The name sounds unusual, and understandably it raises questions. The active ingredient is not literally salmon sperm applied to the skin. It is polynucleotides, sometimes shortened to PN, which are naturally occurring DNA fragments extracted and purified from salmon milt. Salmon DNA is remarkably similar in structure to human DNA, which is part of why it is so well tolerated by our tissue. Once purified to a medical grade and sterilised, these polynucleotides are formulated into an injectable gel that is placed into the skin using a series of fine micro injections, usually across the face, though the treatment is also popular for the under eye area, neck, and scalp.

Once in the skin, polynucleotides get to work in a way that is genuinely different from most other injectables. Rather than adding volume in the way a dermal filler does, or relaxing muscle movement in the way botulinum toxin does, polynucleotides act as a signal to your own cells. They encourage fibroblasts, the cells responsible for producing collagen and elastin, to become more active. They also have a strong affinity for water, which improves hydration from within the skin rather than sitting on the surface. On top of this, polynucleotides have well documented anti inflammatory and tissue repairing properties, which is actually why they were first used in wound healing and orthopaedic medicine long before they became popular in aesthetics.

The practical result for most clients is skin that looks calmer, more even in tone, and noticeably more hydrated and bouncy within a few weeks of treatment. Fine lines soften, texture improves, and many people notice a reduction in redness and reactivity, particularly if they have sensitive or compromised skin. It is a treatment I often recommend for people who want their skin to genuinely look healthier, rather than simply looking like they have had something done. That subtlety is part of why it has resonated so strongly online. It fits the current appetite for skin quality treatments over more obvious changes to facial shape or expression.

A course of treatment typically involves three sessions spaced around three to four weeks apart, with results building progressively and continuing to improve for some weeks after the final session. Many clients then choose to have a top up every four to six months to maintain their results, particularly as we head into the colder months when skin in the UK tends to lose hydration and resilience more quickly.
